Why I Stopped Chasing Discipline—and Started Prioritizing Instead

For a long time, I believed discipline was everything.

It was something I was taught growing up—stay consistent, stay focused, stay disciplined. And for years, I held onto that idea. It shaped how I saw myself.

But I also remember the moments when my discipline slipped.

And when it did, I didn’t just feel off track—I felt like I had lost a part of who I was. I started questioning myself. “Am I not that capable person anymore?”

That feeling stayed with me longer than I expected.

The Shift I Didn’t Expect

Through building the Fyrst Method and working on myself, I began to notice something:

It wasn’t just about discipline.
It was about what I was trying to be disciplined about.

I was trying to do everything at once—be consistent everywhere, show up for everything, and somehow not feel overwhelmed.

But the truth was, I was missing one key piece: prioritization.

What Prioritization Changed for Me

When I started prioritizing, something shifted.

Instead of asking, “How do I stay disciplined?”
I began asking, “What actually matters right now?”

That question brought clarity.

I no longer felt like I had to do everything at once. I could choose. And in choosing, I felt lighter.

Whether it was work, studies, or even showing up for family—I started giving each thing its space, instead of letting everything compete for my attention.

From Overwhelm to Clarity

Earlier, when everything felt important, my mind was scattered. I would feel anxious, constantly thinking I was falling behind somewhere.

But prioritizing helped me:

  • Slow down
  • Focus on one thing at a time
  • Let go of the pressure to “do it all”

And interestingly, people around me understood. When something truly mattered, I could show up for it better.

Where Discipline Fits In Now

I haven’t let go of discipline.

But now, I use it differently.

I use discipline to follow through on what I’ve already decided matters.

That changed everything.

Discipline is no longer a pressure I carry—it’s a tool I use.

What I See Now

Today, I see prioritization as awareness in action.

It shows me where I am, what I value, and how I want to move forward.

And discipline supports that movement.

Together, they’ve helped me feel more in control—not by doing more, but by doing what matters.
